The original idea for the fifty walks website was to try to challenge myself to go on fifty walks, each in a different location, in a one year span. I am lucky enough to live in an area with many interesting things to see but do not go out exploring as much as I would like. I also like taking photos of places I have been, so a website showing local places to walk seemed a great way to get out and get some exercise as well try to pick up some new technical skills.
However reality soon hit and I realized that things like the weather, jobs and a bout of influenza just would not allow me to complete the project in a year. I decided that I would simply forget about the time constraint and return to what was a great idea, trying to get out and explore interesting places to take a walk.
Many of these walks are what I would call a short stroll. I have found that most books and websites listing places to walk tend to focus on long hikes and overlook the pleasure of just taking a short walk. I also tend to explore new places rather than return to a place again and again, so most of these places are new to me. A few are places the family has gone before and enjoyed but many I spotted while driving past or found on the web. These means some are not quite as exciting as others. But that is part of the adventure of trying to find some new places.
